Lauryn-Maggie Smith and Victoria DiVito, St. Petersburg Collegiate High School sophomores, received a State Merit Award in Literature from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), as participants in the Reflections Arts Program. Over 8,000 schools participated, with more than 300,000 entries expressing the theme, “Let Your Imagination Fly.”
Lauryn-Maggie wrote a poem addressing the stress of societal expectations and how they are changing the way the millennial generation perceives themselves and others. Victoria said, “I wrote my poem in an attempt to capture the power of imagination, and how limitless it can be. Every new idea and thought comes from the imagination, and everyone is capable of doing great things. My poem uses personification to express the opportunities and fascination of imagination.”
Lauryn-Maggie and Victoria were honored on May 14th at Edgewater High School in Orlando, Florida. National and state PTA representatives presented each merit and excellence winner with a certificate and a ribbon.
The thirty State Award of Excellence winning entries were forwarded to National PTA for additional judging and the national winners will be announced at a later date. Learn more about the PTA Reflections Program and download a list of all of the state winners.
